Guide
To show up in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers, AI tools need to be able to read your website, understand exactly what you do and where, and see the same facts about you across the web. These are the steps, in the order we'd do them for a small business.

Check your robots.txt allows AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. If they're blocked, nothing else matters.
Keep your important text in the page itself, not inside images or scripts that load later. Add an llms.txt file: a short plain-text summary of your business and links to your key pages.
AI assistants quote clear, direct answers. Use the questions customers ask as headings, and answer each in the first one or two sentences below it.
"Do you serve Davis?" → "Yes. We install countertops in Davis, Woodland and across Yolo County." is easy to quote. A paragraph of marketing language isn't.
Use the identical business name, description, services and service area on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and directories.
Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema to your site with sameAs links to those profiles, so AI tools can tell they're all the same business.
For local searches it's the strongest signal you control. AI answers about local businesses lean heavily on Maps data and reviews.
AI answers draw heavily from pages that already rank well. Service pages, area pages, speed and schema still do the heavy lifting.
Mentions in local news, chambers of commerce, directories, partner sites and client sites help AI tools trust that you're real and relevant.
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google the questions your customers ask ("best handyman in San Ramon", "who installs Corian countertops near Davis") and note whether you're named. Track Search Console impressions too.

Generative engine optimization: making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and recommend. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
No. Organic recommendations can't be bought. They come from clear information, consistency and reputation.
Technical fixes are picked up as AI tools and search engines recrawl, often within weeks. Reputation signals like reviews and mentions build over months.
